The Conservative sociologist (New Right) Ferdynand Zweig first predicted the end of the old working class in the 1960's. The working class he argued were becoming more and more like the middle class in terms of wealth, income, values, attitudes and politics. With the growth
of home ownership, the decline of statism, the rise of a consumer
society in the 1980's and 1990s Zweig has remained consistent to this position.
