This guide will take you through the process of making a successful UCAS Application

UCAS Applications: Completing the Form

Students should register at www.ucas.com, clicking the 'APPLY' tab and selecting 'Register / Log in to use Apply 2012'.

You need a Buzzword to link your account to DTC  Please see the notice board for this information.  dtchighered2012

Having registered, students should select to be registered with their tutor group. YOU NEED TO MAKE A RECORD OF ANY NUMBERS/ USERNAMES/ PASSWORDS YOU ARE GIVEN AS THE SCHOOL DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THESE IF YOU LOSE THEM!

The UCAS form changes every year in very subtle ways.  If students are confused about the form it is vital that you click on the 'help' question marks which will provide guidance about specific sections.

Common Errors

Welsh - Students should guard against ticking the box asking for correspondence in Welsh from Welsh Universities, or you won't be able to understand the information sent to you!

Passport - This information only needs to be provided if your permanent home is outside the EU, and therefore does not apply to students at DTC.

Feecode - The feecode for the vast majority of students is '02 UK, Chl, IoM or EU student finance services' and for support arrangements their form should read 'Kent' as the Local Authority is the source by which the Universities draw the funding for their place.  This is also the case for students not intending to take out loans as it is still the LA who pay for the excess of their course fees above the tuition fees charged to the student.  If they check the box with any other code you will get this additional bill!

Area of Permanent Residency and Residential Category - Almost every student should enter 'Dartford' and the category 'A UK Citizen/ EU National'.  It is vital you get your nationality correct or you will be treated as an overseas applicant and be charged accordingly.

Progress File - Some students will know this as the National Record of Achievement completed during Year 11.

Nominated Access - This section is for students who are on a GAP year when they submit their UCAS forms and allows you to nominate a member of your family to correspond with UCAS on your behalf.

Activities in Preparation for HE - This related to summer schools, master classes and the Aim higher prgramme.  It DOES NOT mean Open Days or the HE Fair.

Parental Education: This asks students to declare if your parents went to University.  It is part of the government's audit tool to help them widen participation and does not have an influence on whether you are given an offer or not.

School - When you enter the information about your previous schools you will need their examination centre code.  The code for DTC is 61113

Exam dates - All exam dates (GCSEs, AS and A2) should be shown as AUGUST of the year taken e.g. 08/2012, even if you took the exam in January, as this is when qualifications are certificated.

Entering AS Level Grades - Students have to declare AS Level Unit grades.  Under the section for AS qualifications, you should enter all the modules you took at AS, including the grades achieved.  Under the section for A Level qualifications, you should then re-enter these AS modules and the new modules you are taking for A2 which make up the whole qualification.  It is in this section that grades for re-take modules should show as PENDING. e.g.
