Functionalists see power/authority as a thing. Society for functionalists is characterised by and legitimacy. The exertion of legitimate authority is therefore seen by functionalists as something which works for the of society as a whole. Authority maintains the social order and strengthens social .

Marxists by contrast emphasise that power really comes from the economic in society. The dominant class control the means of (money, land, factories, capital, raw materials) and therefore have power over the working class. Economic power is seen by Marxists as the source of power in society. Workers are powerless and have to sell their power to capitalists in order to survive. The exertion of such economic power by the dominant class only benefits the dominant class themselves to the detriment of the class
