Effects on Bird Life

Welcome

T his page outlines the threat to bird life on the Hoo Penninsula from the proposed airport development at Cliffe

The following birds are all included in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, or are birds of conservation concern, because of the threats to their survival in the country as a whole. Some of these species breed on the Hoo Peninsula, some over-winter, some are regular passage migrants, and a few are rare or occasional vagrants. They have all been recorded on the Hoo Peninsula over the last four decades. The Cliffe airport proposals pose significant threats to these birds, primarily through

  • Direct loss of habitat;
  • Potential impacts outside the land occupied by the airport, including flooding of the marshes;
  • Disturbance from traffic, people, aircraft, etc.; and
  • In the case of larger birds, such as waders and ducks, possible culling or deliberate disturbance to reduce the risk of birds colliding with aircraft.

The birds described with below are all included on either the Red or Amber List of Birds of Conservation Concern. Twenty-one of these species are so greatly threatened that they are included on the UK government's Biodiversity Action Plan.
