Physical Education is a foundation subject in the Curriculum. It is compulsory from the age of to 16. You are taught through a range of activity areas: , gymnastics, swimming, , dance and outdoor and adventurous activities. The activity areas you experience are chosen by the PE department in your school. These may depend on staff expertise, attitude and the and equipment available. The amount of time spent in PE lessons varies between schools but the government recommends a minimum of hours a week. Within a PE lesson students have the opportunity to take on a number of different roles. These may include; a performer - doing the skills, a - leading the team, a coach - telling and showing others how to improve, an official - umpiring or a game. Students may also take part in different competitions such as or knockouts.

PE and sport may take place at various times. Timetabled lessons include examined courses such as and A level, practical PE Lessons or as part of special cross-curricular days. Extra -curricular activities include school matches, lunchtime practices, visits to other sports facilities. Some schools offer visits such as skiing or watersports trips.
