The Roman was run by and the law said the father was of the household. It was his duty to correct and punish and in Rome he could throw his children out, sell them as slaves or even have them put to .
Until the fourth century a father could order a new-born child to be exposed (left outdoors to die). Poor parents sometimes did this or fathers who wanted . However this changed by the end of the fourth century and a father's power to sell or his children or slaves was taken away.

Girls obeyed their fathers before and their husbands after. They had to be good and mothers and manage the house. Divorce was easy -a man just sent his wife back to her if he wanted.

Marriage was arranged as a deal between families and the bride's father paid a to the bridegroom. Girls married in their early teens but it was not always for as many Romans died young. The marriage ceremony consisted of the bride wearing a long white with a red or yellow veil. Wedding vows were made at the bride's father's house and then they all walked to the bridegroom's house in a procession. The groom then carried his bride over the threshold and this was followed by a great to celebrate.

Wives were expected to be modest, obedient and virtuous. It was their duty to produce and raise . They had to spin, weave, cook, order slaves, teach the children and if men were away at to look after the family business.
A woman had slaves to do the housework. Her job was to make sure they were not . She would spend time reading, writing or visiting friends. She would go to the theatre or races. The rich generally had easy lives.
A poor woman was always busy cooking, cleaning, sewing, carrying and looking after the children. The only thing she didn't do was the - men did that.

Very few women went to work but there were some women doctors, , dressmakers and hairdressers.

Therefore women's rights were not recognised in the following ways:

Women's rights were recognised as the Empire progressed in the following ways:
1. Richer women were taught to read and write
2. They were allowed to own and work in shops
3. Women athletes and were allowed up till 200 AD
4 A daughter could inherit property from her father
