Equal opportunity is an idea used to address issues connected to direct and indirect . Originally the legislation was seen just in terms of gender, race and disability. Today however health and social care professionals must be aware of all types of discrimination including discrimination based on health status, or sexuality.
In health settings to have an equal opportunity means "the right of an individual to have access to provisions, services and opportunities regardless of ability, age, gender, race, religion sexuality or status". Organisations within health care therefore have a to make sure that this happens. All organisations should have an equal opportunities which is understood agreed and applied by all members of the organisation. Organisations should make sure through staff selection, and in service training that their equal opportunities policy is put into practise.
Managers in health and social care settings have a responsibility to staff individually and as a group to help them implement the equal opportunities policy thereby upholding the underlying principles of health and social care. Managers are also responsible for the implementation of the policy and setting up clear structures of what should happen if the equal opportunities policy is infringed e.g. procedures.
Individual professionals in health and social care settings have a responsibility to attend meetings, and staff development sessions. They also have a to support their colleagues in the implementation of the equal opportunities policy. Individuals must also take responsibility to acts of discrimination as they occur within the organisation
